A Centre for Strategic Research has been founded as a separate scientific and scholarly research unit of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, in
                               accordance with the decision of the Academy's Assembly of 28th September 2000.

The Centre's fundamental taske are: the conduct of research, scientific and scholarly discussions, and the promotion and publication of studies on issues of strategic
national and international significance to the Republic of Macedonia.

The Centre studies historical, political, economic, cultural, demographic and security aspects of Macedonia's relations with the neighbouring Balkan states and
beyond, in particular from the point of view of their influence on and implications for the situation of the Republic of Macedonia, its integrity, independence and
sovereignty.

In order to carry out these functions, the Centre will collaborate with institutions and organisations with activities of a similar character both within the country and
abroad and in concert with them will undertake scientific and scholarly projects and exchanges of information and documentation, and will hold periodical
consultation contacts, meetings and other sorts of communication.

In this sense the Centre is prepared to accept with interest and attention initiatives on cooperation from interested individuals, institutions and organisations.

According to its Work Programme for 2001 and 2002, the Centre will be engaged in the study of the following subjects:

          1. The fundamental long-term interests of the Republic of Macedonia and sources and forms of threats to these.

          2. The current situation and prospects of the international position of the Republic of Macedonia, particularly of its relations with its
          neighbouring states, the European Union, the U.S.A. and Russia.

          3. Demographic and migratory trends of the Republic of Macedonia and their political and socio-economic implications.

          4. Balkan studies: historical, political, economic, cultural and demographic aspects of Macedonia's relations with its neighbouring
          countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia - separate studies concerning each of these countries).

                                             Expert papers on the following subjects:

                 a) Key issues regarding the national minorities in the Republic of Macedonia and possible solutions on a long-term basis.

          b) The problematisation of internal relationships and of the external position of the Republic of Macedonia in particular documents
          issuing from the neighbouring states and certain foreign institutions and organisations.

          c) Basic economic priorities in the current and development policies of the Republic of Macedonia.
