RESEARCH CENTER FOR GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

Introduction

The Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (RCGEB) is a research unit of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts founded February 1986. The main goal of the RCGEB is to promote genetic engineering and biotechnology in the Republic of Macedonia through research, education and training. Within the RCGEB, the National Reference Laboratory for Hemoglobinopathies, founded in 1970, is acting. Since1997 this laboratory became an International Reference Laboratory for Hemoglobinopathies, and the International Hemoglobin Information Center. Since 1998 the RCGEB is the coordinator of Postgraduate studies on molecular biology and genetic engineering, organized by the University "Ss. Cyril and Methodius", Skopje.

In 2009, a National Reference Centre for Genomics and Proteomics founded by European Commision (FP7 infrastructural grant) was established, with the main goal to upgrade the laboratory and to provide a technological platform for high throughput genomic and proteomic research (www.manu.edu.mk/macprogen).

In 2008 RCGEB was awarded with the highest state award "11 October" for science and education.
