The ICEIM is the focal point for Macedonia of the UN IAEA Electric Power Database and Methodologies and of the UNESCO World Solar Summit Process. Also, the ICEIM is a member of the International Network of Centres for Sustainable Development and the seat of the Macedonian National Committee of the World Energy Council.
The permanent research staff of the ICEIM includes: six academicians, one scientific advisor, one scientific collaborator, two assistants and one junior researcher.
Within the ICEIM, a PV Solar Energy Laboratory as well as a Bioinformatics & Neurofeedback Unit, are active.
ICEIM cooperates with numerous domestic and foreign institutions.
Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (RCGEB)
The Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (RCGEB) was founded on February 28, 1986. Within the RCGEB, there functions the National Reference Laboratory for monogenic diseases, founded in 1970.
The RCGEB and its laboratories are furnished with modern and sophisticated equipment.
Employed in the RCGEB are: one full professor, three associates, two junior assistants and two research fellows. In addition there are three to four postgraduates working on master's or doctoral theses.
Currently there are several projects in the RCGEB: Molecular Basis of the Most Common Hereditary Diseases in the Population of the Republic of Macedonia (thalassaemia, cystic fibrosis, haemophilia, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, fragile-X syndrome, microdeletions of the Y-chromosome, haemochromatosis), malignancies (colonic cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer), infections (hepatitis C virus, human papilloma, Chlamidia trachomatis, etc.) and chromosomal anomalies.
The RCGEB is the reference institution in the Republic of Macedonia for the techniques of recombinant DNK technology in the diagnosis and prevention of congenital diseases, malignant diseases and in forensic medicine. The RCGEB is the only institution in Macedonia which carries out prenatal diagnosis of monogenic diseases.
In the past fifteen years the Centre has educated young scientific personnel to meet its own needs and also those of other scientific institutions. The RCGEB is the educational base of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje for postgraduate students in molecular biology and genetic engineering.
The Centre cooperates with many scientific institutions both within Macedonia and abroad.
The Lexicographical Centre is a scientific and scholarly unit at the Academy and was established on 28 September 2000. The Centre's assignments are: the preparation of a Macedonian Encyclopaedia in which, on the basis of a fundamental scientific and scholarly verification of the facts, the historical entirety of Macedonian civilisation will be revealed and presented; and the preparation of a Specialised Scientific and Scholarly Terminology in Macedonian.
In addition to its external associates, one specialist associate, two assistants and a technical secretary are permanently employed in the Centre.
The associates of the Lexicographical Centre are preparing the alphabetical index for the Macedonian Encyclopaedia, as a prerequisite for the completion of the texts by the year 2003. To date c. 12,000 names have been excerpted for the encyclopaedia.
The Lexicographical Centre issues its own Bulletin, devoted to the preparation of the Macedonian Encyclopaedia. The completion of the Macedonian Encyclopaedia has been entrusted to the Chief Editorial Board and to the Editorial Board of the Macedonian Encyclopaedia.
The Centre is also working on the preparation of a Specialised Scientific and Scholarly Terminology in Macedonian. To date 107 issues of the periodical Specialised Scientific and Scholarly Terminology in Macedonian have been issued, as well as notes on the technological material printed. The completion of this project is entrusted to the Board for the Compilation of a Macedonian Terminology, the Board's Linguistic Commission and 30 terminological commissions in specific fields.
The Centre for Areal Linguistics is a scientific and scholarly unit at the Academy and was established on 28 September 2000.
The Centre carries out research into the role of the spatial factor in the development and functioning of language.
The multicultural and multilingual Balkan environment is an ideal base for research in the field of areal linguistics, i.e. for the development of the theory of inter-language contacts, and for a study of the mechanisms of language interference. At the same time, such research leads to a more precise determination of the place of the Macedonian language and its dialects in the Slavonic and Balkan linguistic worlds.
Three associates are engaged on the work of the Centre, and also an extensive circle of external associates both within the country and abroad.
The Centre is engaged on the following projects: 1. International linguistic atlases, i.e. 1.1. The Pan-Slavonic Linguistic Atlas (P.S.L.A.) and 1.2. Atlas linguarum Europae (A.L.E.) These two projects are of a multilateral, international character and are coordinated by the International Committee of Slavonic Scholars. Within the framework of the project excerption is carried out together with a historical and typological interpretation of Macedonian dialect material, as well as assessment and computer processing of relevant linguistic maps from the Slavonic and wider European territories. The Centre is a referential centre for the computer processing of materials from the Pan-Slavonic Linguistic Atlas; 2. The Dialects of the Macedonian Language. Within the framework of this project a critical compilation and preparation for publication of materials from the inheritance of the Macedonian linguist Bo`idar Vidoeski is being carried out; 3. The Function and Geographical Characteristics of Morpho-syntactical Balkanisms, 3.1. The function and distribution of indicators of spatial and temporal references in the Macedonian language (in the Balkan context).
The Centre is compiling: a Bibliography of the Macedonian Language and a Macedonian Linguistic Bibliography: (a) as part of the central bibliography of Slavonic linguistics (published in Poland), and (b) as part of the central linguistic bibliography (published in the Netherlands).
In the interest of staff development, the Centre holds regular discussion sessions devoted to the grammatical confrontation of the Slavonic and Balkan languages.
The Centre for Strategic Research is a scientific and scholarly unit at the Academy and was established on 28 September 2000.
The Centre's assignments are: the stimulation, organisation and carrying out of research, the holding of talks and public discussions on strategic issues of national and international significance to the Republic of Macedonia. The Centre researches into issues, phenomena and relations of a historical, geopolitical, economic, social, cultural and security nature from the aspect of their long- and middle-term significance to the development of the Republic of Macedonia as an independent and sovereign state.
The work of the Centre is carried out by one full professor, one scientific and scholarly associate, one candidate for a master's degree and one technical secretary. The Centre has ten distinguished external associates from various scientific and scholarly fields who are continuously engaged in scientific and scholarly research work and consultative activities.
Work is under way on three scientific and scholarly studies: 1. The Fundamental Long-term Interests of the Republic of Macedonia and the sources and forms of threats to it; 2. Demographic and migration trends in the Republic of Macedonia and their political and socioeconomic implications; 3. Balkan studies: historical, political, economic, cultural and demographic aspects of Macedonia's relations with neighbouring countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia).
The Centre is in contact with domestic and foreign institutions over the preparation of a new research programme and its financing. It organises scientific and scholarly symposiums and round-tables on current issues with the participation of well-known domestic and foreign scientists and scholars.
The Centre carries out an exchange of scientific and scholarly personnel, works and publications with several countries worldwide, and above all with the neighbouring countries.
In the realisation of its tasks, the Centre is open to active cooperation with institutions and organisations both in Macedonia and abroad with similar activities or a similar character.
